Today, Love Won

(For Darius and Salena)

Yesterdays are hands full of seeds—
& today, love has won.

Yesterdays are defeats & derivatives—
conquests & you-turns;

ancestors & heavenly goodbyes.
centuries & gone too soons;

It begins and ends with love.
& today, love has won.

Yesterdays stumble into our rivers—
replenish our veins with calming noises &
trumpets for our sleepless nights.

nothing gives us peace.

Yesterdays wake the crises, and the comas—
catching exhales lost in escapes from the things
that never died,
living within us, and with us…

despite, we are asked to open our hearts …

& when we do,
life begins and ends with …

days, we stand here to witness sunrays

& tell the calming noises and the crises
& tell hands on our beating, exhaled hearts —
today, love has won.

Yesterdays have broken our limbs—
clogged our ears, poisoned our eyes
shaved our heads, tattooed fears

& doubts over our bodies covered

in the enemy’s
commandments to find comfort

in
a poetic life sentence
equivalent to giving up.

We won’t.

Yesterdays are hands full of seeds—
crises are seeds; comas are seeds;
tattooed fears, and doubts.
seeds.

things that never died, living within us, and with us
seeds.

beginning and ending with,
love.

& today,

It is love
that has won.
